2017 PRCA Permit Members Of The Year Named

LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- December 7, 2017 --- In the bareback bronc riding, Tyler Berghuis came back with a vengeance after finishing second in the 2016 Permit Member of the Year Challenge. Berghuis won both rounds of the 2017 Challenge with a total of 165.5 points on two head to walk away as the 2017 Champion bareback bronc rider.

He currently is a senior at Tarleton State University, majoring in Agricultural Industries and Agencies.

“It’s exciting to be back in Vegas,” said Berghuis, who has dreams to one day qualify for the “Super Bowl” of Rodeo, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “Rodeoing on my Permit has given me another year of experience before my Rookie year.”

At 22-years-old, Berghuis has seen great success in the rodeo arena. He was a two-time Minnesota High School Rodeo Bareback Champion and qualified for the National High School Finals three-times. Outside of the arena, he was a four-time State High School Wrestling qualifier, which very well could have aided him in his bareback riding success, as it is the most physically demanding event of rodeo.

Berghuis will compete on his Rookie card in 2018.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association legend and Hall of Famer, Joe Baumgartner placed his bet on one Permit Challenge contestant, “Bear Pascoe very well may be the first cowboy to wear both a gold Super Bowl XLVI ring and a Gold Buckle.”

A former tight-end in the National Football League (NFL), Pascoe walked away as the 2017 Permit Member of the Year Challenge Champion Steer Wrestler. Pascoe was one of two contestants to get both of his steers down, with a total of 9.8 seconds on two head.

He is not new to the western lifestyle, growing up on a cattle ranch in California’s Central Valley and the son-in-law of ProRodeo Hall of Fame Steer Wrestler, John W. Jones JR.

“My heroes have and always will be my dad, my brother Ryan Pascoe and John W. Jones JR.,” said Pascoe. “He has had a big impact on me in the rodeo arena. He’s the one that taught me how to steer wrestle. Johnny has taught me a lot over the past couple years and I am honored and blessed to have him as a coach, father-in law and most importantly a friend.”

Pascoe will compete on his Rookie card in 2018.

Bull Rider, Colby Demo, celebrated his birthday with a new Permit Challenge Champion buckle. Demo was the only cowboy to cover two bulls with 144.5 points total.

The Team Roping Heading Champion was Jeff Flenniken from Caldwell, Idaho. The Team Roping Heeling Champion was Wyatt Hansen from Oakdale, California.

Johnny Espeland walked away as the Saddle Bronc Riding Permit Member of the Year Champion after winning the second round and being one of two cowboys to cover both of his horses with a total of 137 points.

Cody Craig dominated in the Tie-Down Roping, winning both rounds, putting him 5.5 seconds ahead of his competition with a total of 20.2 seconds on two runs.

The Rookie Bull Riding champion was Shad Heiner. He was the only Rookie to cover both of his bulls with a total of 156 points.

PRCA

The eighth annual Permit Member of the Year Challenge was hosted in conjunction with the Benny Binion's Bucking Horse & Bull Sale on Dec. 7th at the South Point Arena. The top five Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Permit holders in each rodeo event competed for a total purse of $21,000. This year, a Rookie Bull Riding, with five of our top 15 rookie bull riders, was also held, boasting a $2,500 prize.

To purchase a PRCA membership card contestants must fill their permit, meaning they must win $1,000 at a PRCA sanctioned rodeo. They can then purchase their PRCA card and compete in hopes to qualify for the “Super Bowl” of rodeo, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Many contestants choose to compete on their Permit for a full year to gain experience prior to their rookie year as a PRCA card holder and to qualify to compete at the Permit Challenge.
