Since 1950, the San Antonio (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo has hosted some of the biggest names in ProRodeo and witnessed some fast times and high scores, as cowboys competed for this iconic rodeo’s large payout. Bull rider Ardie Maier set the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo record in 2010 with his 94-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Cyclone.

Since 1966, the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, Miss., has hosted some of the biggest names in ProRodeo and witnessed some fast times and high scores, as cowboys competed for this iconic rodeo’s large payout. Both steer wrestling arena records at Jackson were set in 1983. J.W. Farrington clocked in at 2.9 seconds, while John W. Jones Jr. came in at 6.6 seconds on two runs.

The winter season may be cold, but ProRodeo’s competition was hot, as the first week of February saw 48 cowboys move up within the Top 15 as they competed for nearly $1 million in prizemoney from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5. Placing second in the average at Fort Worth launched tie-down roper from the bottom to 10th place.

Known for his saddle bronc savvy, South Dakota's Cole Elshere has reintroduced bull riding to his all-around game. At Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.), Elshere showed he's no bull riding slouch, winning more than $4,000 as he builds momentum towards a rewarding 2018 season.

The San Angelo Rodeo record book is full of big names in ProRodeo, but only two cowboys have the honor of holding two arena records at San Angelo. Saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell (pictured left) set two arena records in 2015. Steer wrestler Roy Duvall (pictured right) set one record in 1986 and another in 1990.

Eddie Becker won the NFSR average title in 1973 with a 197.7-second time on eight head. His best finish in the steer roping world standings was fourth in 1974. He passed away Jan. 8 at the age of 88.

In what can only be called the calm before the storm, only six cowboys moved up in the Top 15 of the PRCA World Standings last week, while three rodeos worth a collective $1.25 million are underway this week. Bull rider Eli Vastbinder jumped from 15th to ninth thanks to winning $2,891 at the NE Mississippi Championship Rodeo at Tupelo, Miss.

Bull rider Jordan Hansen is shown above winning Round 8 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER last month in Las Vegas. Hansen had an 86-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Tequila. On Jan. 26, he won the Division 2 Xtreme Bulls event in Rapid City, S.D., and then Jan. 27, Riker Carter captured the Division 2 Xtreme Bulls event title in Rapid City.

Since 1950, the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, has hosted some of the biggest names in ProRodeo and witnessed some fast times and high scores, as cowboys competed for this iconic rodeo’s large payout. Steer wrestler and tie-down roper Butch Myers set the Fort Worth record for most money won in all-around in 1989 with $17,635. Adjusted for inflation over the last 29 years, that’s the equivalent of winning $35,900 today, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The 2018 season is still fresh, but many cowboys are off to a running start in the yearlong marathon race to make the Top 15 and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. Since the season began Oct. 1, 2017, more than 50 rodeos have been held, but all it takes is one big win for a cowboy to jump from the bottom of the world standings into the Top 15.
