Bareback rider Jake Brown split fifth place on Kesler Rodeo's Starburst (above) with an 84-point ride in Round 6 Dec. 6. Brown suffered a concussion while riding Rosser Rodeo’s Gold Coast Jackie in Round 7 and will be sidelined for at least Round 8 and Round 9.

Bareback rider Jake Vold is doing his best Ryder Wright impression. Wright won four straight saddle bronc riding rounds outright to open this year’s WNFR, and Vold has nearly equaled that in his event. The Ponoka, Alberta, cowboy won his third straight round Tuesday night with an 85.5-point trip on Burch Rodeo’s Jim Dandy.

Defending Tie-down Roping World Champion Caleb Smidt had a nightmarish first four rounds at the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. The 27-year-old from Huntsville, Texas, placed fourth in Round 2, but had double-digit times in Rounds 1 and 3, and took a no-time in Round 4. Everything turned around with a blistering 6.7-second run Monday night.
