Students from schools around Pima County turned out Feb. 20 for the annual REACh (Rodeo Education and Children) day at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. The kids learned about rodeo history, culture and techniques. Another round of classes was held Tuesday morning. Chuck Schmidt is back in the chutes and riding with more confidence after winning the 138th annual Silver Spurs Rodeo. Schmidt was ranked No. 26 in the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings with $6,907 prior to his win in Florida. The Silver Spurs Rodeo added an extra $4,907 to his season earnings.

Marty Yates and his new horse haven't been to many rodeos together, but are already collecting large checks and clicking like old friends. The 22-year-old tie-down roper from Stephenville, Texas, combined with 9-year-old Big Time to win the Feb. 9-15 Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, Miss., with a time of 15.5 seconds on two head.

It's easier to maintain a spot in the Top 15 than it is to catch up later on in the season. Steer wrestler Chance Howard was off to an early start by winning the RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo and now he's aiming to stay in the Top 15.

For the first time in 17 years, a bullfight endorsed by the PRCA took place Feb. 11 at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fla. Cody Emerson, a 28-year-old PRCA bullfighter from Marble Falls, Texas, won the competition with an 88-point score.

The Rotary Rodeo in Starkville, Miss., raised $25,000 for local charities, and had a record turnout Feb. 10-11. “It’s our largest fundraiser of the year, and supports all of our charitable events,” said Trey Breckenridge, the rodeo chair for the Starkville Rotary Club. “All the proceeds go toward community, humanitarian and educational charities.”

The Simpson/Buhler convoy is hitting the road for San Antonio this weekend. Although they’re not trucking in from their homes in Canada, they’ve still got a thousand miles to go before they reach the rodeo. Traveling and ProRodeo go hand-in-hand since rodeos are held from coast-to-coast and from Canada on down through Mexico, so cowboys often carpool to share the travel expenses.
