Weekly Recap

by Matt Naber | Jan 28, 2019

Unlike the weather, the end of January was looking a bit like July for ProRodeo, as cowboys competed at one of the highest-paying rodeos of the regular season, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. Meanwhile, the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, is underway.

This week's competition saw a new leader for the year's top ride in saddle bronc riding, while the top run of steer wrestling this year was equaled.

So far, there have been 66 competitions during the 2019 season worth $4,587,534, and the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo made up $478,326 of that when it concluded Jan. 27.

The fastest times and highest scores might not always make the record book, but they make a lasting memory for fans and competitors. With about 650 PRCA competitions across the Western Hemisphere each year, there are plenty of opportunities to make a memorable ride.

Although the prize money differs from one competition to the next, the judging remains consistent across the board.

In addition to the fame that comes with winning the most prize money, each ride was a chance to be the best of the week. Here’s a look at the highest scores and fastest times for each event during that period.

Saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright posted the top score of the 2019 leaderboard when he made a 90-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo's Greeley Hat Works Hitman in Denver, Jan. 27.

Steer wrestler Harley Cole made a 3.4-second run in Denver, Jan. 26, tying for the fastest run of the young season.

Two bareback riders made 87.5-point rides this week. Clayton Biglow’s ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Major Party in Denver was Jan. 21, while Kaycee Feild's ride on Rafter G Rodeo's Biscuit came in Fort Worth, Jan. 26.

Team ropers Bubba Buckaloo and Hunter Koch made a 4.1-second run in Denver, Jan. 25.

Tie-down roper Tuf Cooper made a 7.3-second run in Denver, Jan. 25.

Barrel racer Kathy Grimes made a 12.72-second run at Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.), Jan. 25.

Bull rider Cody Rostockyj made a 90-point ride on JK Rodeo's Reaper in Denver, Jan. 26.
