Yates family adds a chapter to its rodeo success

by Tracy Renck | Nov 19, 2018

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –  Some ranches and farms are handed down from generation to generation, so it is with rodeo. Some families just seem to produce more rodeo athletes than others.

Families like the McEntires, the Coopers, and the Duvalls and the Yates.

Dick Yates, and his children, J.D., and Kelly had a feature story in the 1988 National Finals Rodeo program. The photo above is what appeared in the program.

The Yates family made history in 1984 as the only father-son-daughter trio to compete in the same year in the NFR. Dick and J.D. were team ropers and Kelly competed in barrel racing.

Fast-forward to 2018, and Trey Yates, J.D.’s son, will be making his debut at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as a team roping heeler. Yates is roping with header Aaron Tsinigine, who captured the 2015 world championship. Trey is fifth in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $98,439.
