Roscoe Jarboe claims San Juan Capistrano win

by Tracy Renck | Aug 26, 2018

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. –  The timing couldn’t have been better for bull rider Roscoe Jarboe.

Jarboe, who was sitting in the No. 16 spot in the Aug. 20 PRCA | RAM World Standings, gave himself a huge jolt to try and make his third consecutive trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by winning the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo, Aug. 26.

Jarboe had an 89.5-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s No. 780 to capture the title for the first time in his career.

“I had never even seen that bull before,” said Jarboe, 22. “For a bull I have not seen a whole lot I don’t really trust having anybody else tell me how he is. I wanted to ride him for what he was, and he was a good bull. He was in the gate and around to the left and up and down and got it on. He let me sit up there and do my thing. To get this win feels great.”

For his performance, Jarboe earned $6,373. In the Aug. 20 standings, Jarboe trailed  J.W. Harris, who was in the No. 15 position, by only $364.

Jarboe missed three months of the season after injuring his back March 21 following an 87-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s F1 at Rodeo Austin (Texas), but he was able to return for the summer run.

“My back gets pretty sore now and again, but I think in the long run I will be all right,” he said. “This win (in San Juan Capistrano) is something I needed for a while now. I won some smaller rodeos since I came back, but nothing like this. I want to just keep the ball rolling. This is a huge confidence booster for me.”

Other winners at the $265,729 rodeo were all-around cowboy Trevor Brazile ($8,310, tie-down roping and team roping); bareback rider Tilden Hooper (90.5 points on C5 Rodeo’s Virgil); steer wrestler Will Lummus (3.9 seconds); Jeff Flenniken/Jake Minor (5.1 seconds); saddle bronc riders Colton Gordon (85.5 points on Rosser Rodeo’s Yeti Rambler), Rusty Wright (85.5 points on Sutton Rodeos’ Scandal) and Wade Sundell (85.5 points on C5 Rodeo’s Black Hills); and tie-down ropers Taylor Santos (8.5 seconds) and Timber Moore (8.5 seconds).

Hooper’s ride was a rodeo record at the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo, breaking the mark of 89 points set by Tom McFarland in 2007.
