Riemer adds to ‘special’ season in Spanish Fork

by Scott Kaniewski | Jul 25, 2018

SPANISH FORK, Utah – There have been times where Reese Riemer has been on the outside looking in at the Top 15 world standings, needing to win checks everywhere he’s gone.

Lately, that hasn’t been the case.

July 24, for the second consecutive season, Riemer won the average at the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour’s Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo to continue what’s turning into a season to remember for the Texas cowboy.

Riemer’s 16.5 seconds on two head earned him the average title at the Fiesta Days Rodeo. He tied for fifth in the first round in 8.5 seconds and tied for fourth in the second round with an 8.0-second run. Riemer took home $6,378 for his efforts.

“That one was pretty cool. That was the first rodeo I’ve ever won consecutively,” said Riemer, 27. “That committee and that rodeo are pretty special. They always do whatever they can for the contestants. They always try to get more added money for us in my event and try to bring good calves to the rodeo. To do good there is pretty special.”

The two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier is looking for his third berth to the Finals in Las Vegas and first since 2016. Spanish Fork played a role in seeing Riemer leap from 36th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of June 12 to eighth place with $64,604 as of July 25.

“Last year (at Fiesta Days Rodeo) I was really needing to win,” Riemer said. “I was just outside the Top 15. Every check at that point means something. Last year, I had had a rough month. It kind of felt like I got out of a rut at that rodeo. This year has been a special year so far. Just to keep the ball rolling at that rodeo was pretty cool.”

Riemer was riding his bay horse, Edgar, 16.

“A close family friend gave him to my dad when he was 2 or 3 years old,” he said. “He’s pretty much part of the family now. His one thing is he can outrun anything that I’ve ever ridden. He’s so fast I can feel confident on any calf I run. He’s not going to outrun me. He’s a pretty special horse to me.”

Riemer climbed to ninth in the Wrangler Tour standings with 430 points thanks to winning in Spanish Fork. Following the 22 Tour rodeos, the Top 24 in each event advance to the Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9, which could play a key part in helping cowboys advance to the Wrangler NFR.

“It’s huge (for the Tour standings),” Riemer said. “That’ll be a game changer in September for several guys. That’s a cool rodeo at Puyallup. I’ve enjoyed getting to go to it and compete there. The way it works this year is pretty neat. It’ll give a guy on the outside looking in a chance to mix things up toward the end of the season. To have that opportunity to get to rope there possibly will be really nice at the end of the year.”

Other winners of the $289,547 rodeo were all-around cowboy Tanner Green ($6,052, tie-down roping and team roping); bareback rider Caleb Bennett (87 points on Frontier Rodeo's Gun Fire); steer wrestlers Tyler Pearson, Blake Knowles and Josh Garner (8.3 seconds each on two head); team ropers Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira (8.4 seconds on two head); saddle bronc rider Ryder Wright (88 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Yellowstone); barrel racer Tracy Nowlin (16.91 seconds); and bull rider Garrett Tribble (91 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Footloose).
