For the Record: Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo

by Matt Naber | Jul 25, 2018

Steer wrestler J.T. “Whiz” Whisenhunt’s 3.0-second record time at the Deadwood (S.D.) Days of ’76 Rodeo is nearly as old as the rodeo itself.

Since 1924, many arena records have been set and broken, but no bulldogger has topped Whisenhunt’s 1956 mark. Not even the Days of ’76 Rodeo record-holder for the two-run average, Tyler Haugen, came close to topping this 62-year-old record when he went for 7.5 seconds on two runs in 2009.

This year’s Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo is July 25-28, and every ride is a chance to top one of this iconic rodeo’s arena records.

The rodeo’s biggest payout was in 2016 with $229,074.

Trevor Brazile set the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record for most money won in all-around with $6,694 in 2006.

Bareback rider Tyson Thompson set the rodeo record of 89 points in 2006.

Four sets of team ropers share the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record of 4.3 seconds. Derrick Begay and Victor Aros set the record in 2008. It was matched by Brazile and Patrick Smith (2009), Cody Snow and Dugan Kelly (2016), and Clayton Hass and John Robertson (2017). The two-run average record of 9.5 seconds was set by Keven Daniel and Kory Koontz in 2009.

Saddle bronc rider J.J. Elshere set the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record of 90 points in 2008.

Three tie-down ropers share the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record of 7.4 seconds. Cody Ohl set the record in 2000 en route to also setting the two-run average record of 15.0 seconds. Ohl’s 7.4-second record was matched by Boe Brown in 2013 and Jason Schaffer in 2014.

Barrel racer Kappy Allen set the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record of 15.89 seconds in 1999.

Steer roper Guy Allen holds two records at the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo. In 2000, he set the three-run average record of 29.2 seconds. In 2003, Allen set the single-run record of 7.9 seconds.

Bull rider Clint Craig set the Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo record of 91 points in 2006.
