For the Record: Cheyenne

Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days is known as the “Daddy of ’em All” for good reason. 

With roots dating back to 1897 and recent total payouts of nearly $900,000, this rodeo is on every PRCA member’s wish list of rodeos to win.

Cowboys will have a chance to make Cheyenne history and win their share of the prize money, July 21-29.

Cheyenne’s biggest payout was $897,550 in 2010.

J.D. Yates set the Cheyenne record for most money won in all-around in 2016 with $24,351. 

Bareback rider Joe Alexander has the longest-standing Cheyenne record with his 93-point ride from 1974. Taylor Price set the three-head average record of 261 points in 2013. 

Steer wrestler Rick Myhre set the Cheyenne record of 5.1 seconds in 2000. Stephen Canik set the three-head average record of 21.9 seconds in 1997. 

Team ropers Steve Purcella and Britt Bockius set the Cheyenne record of 6.0 seconds in 2004. Travis Tryan and Michael Jones set the three-head average record of 24.0 seconds in 2007. 

Saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss set the Cheyenne record of 91 points in 2010. Jacobs Crawley set the three-head average record of 261 points in 2016. 

Three tie-down ropers share the Cheyenne record of 9.9 seconds. Chad Johnson set the record in 1997, and his time was matched by Cade Swor in 2014 and Scott Kormos in 2017. Marty Yates set the three-head average record of 32.4 seconds in 2015. 

Barrel racer Kristie Peterson set two Cheyenne records in 1996. She made a 17.03-second run, which helped her set the three-run average record of 51.60 seconds. 

Steer roper Justin McKee set the Cheyenne record of 10.1 seconds in 2004. Guy Allen set the three-head average record of 40.9 seconds in 1996. 

Three bull riders share the Cheyenne record of 94 points. Lynn Uptmore set the record in 1992. His score was matched by Brian Herman in 1999 and Wesley Silcox in 2010. Cory McFadden set the three-head average record of 264 points in 2004.
