Wade/McKnight have record-setting Estes Park win

Tyler Wade-Tyler MCKnight Average winner

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Setting rodeo arena records has become common place this week.

Team ropers Tyler Wade and Tyler McKnight joined the fray when they set the arena record at the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo.

Wade and McKnight clocked a 4.0-second run July 10 to win the one-header and establish the record at the Rooftop Rodeo, which has been taking place since 1947.

“It’s pretty awesome when you make a good run like that,” Wade said. “I don’t think you can go after one like that, I think it is just going to happen. Tyler and I are good buddies. We tell each other what we think, the good and the bad and the indifferent. I know he wants to as bad as I do.”

McKnight concurred. Wade and McKnight have roped together in the past, and they teamed up the last weekend of May this season.

“Tyler told me our steer was good, and I tried to lead him pretty straight, so he had a good throw to throw fast, and he handled perfect and made it easy for me,” he said.

Wade and McKnight broke the record that was by three sets of team ropers at 4.1 seconds. Brady Tryan and York Gill set the record in 2012, as did Paul David Tierney and Cody Doescher. Dustin Egusquiza and Clint Summers matched the record in 2016.

Wade and McKnight each earned $4,440.

“This was an awesome feeling to win this rodeo,” McKnight said. “It gives us a boost in confidence."

In addition to Wade and McKnight's record, Dustin Egusquiza and Kory Koontz broke the rodeo record at the Oakley (Utah) Independence Day Rodeo with a time of 3.5 seconds July 6, steer wrestler Will Lummus set a two-head average record in 7.0 seconds in Estes Park, and Rowdy Parrott set the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo steer wrestling record with a 3.4-second run, July 4.
