Standings Shuffle: 16 Cowboys Move Up

by Matt Naber | May 31, 2018

During the calm before ProRodeo’s summer-run storm, 16 cowboys saw their position within the 2018 RAM World Standings improve this week by competing at 10 PRCA rodeos worth a collective $368,876.

Veteran and rookie cowboys know it’s easier to maintain a position at the top than it is to play catch-up when trying to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Every dollar counts, and making the Top 15 early establishes a solid base and builds a cowboy’s confidence as the season picks up pace.

Nobody knows this better than team roping header Tyler Wade and team roping heeler Trey Yates. Wade moved from 19th to 15th among the headers and Yates moved from 17th to 13th among the heelers.

Competition is so tight in team roping right now that tying for third at the Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo at Garden City, Kan., May 26, for $1,955 launched the duo up four spots in their respective standings.

The following cowboys saw their position in the PRCA World Standings improve from May 21-29.

Three Spots
• Matt Reeves moved from 13th to 10th in steer wrestling.
• Kaleb Driggers moved from 13th to 10th in team roping heading.

Two Spots
• Shane Hanchey moved from seventh to fifth in tie-down roping.
• Cody Lee moved from 10th to eighth in steer roping.

One Spot
• Wade Sundell moved from fourth to third in saddle bronc riding.
• Dustin Boquet moved from fifth to fourth in bull riding.
• Andrew Ward moved from sixth to fifth in team roping heading.
• Will Gasperson moved from eighth to seventh in steer roping.
• Jeremy Elshere moved from 10th to ninth in saddle bronc riding.
• Clint Summers moved from 11th to 10th in team roping heeling.
• Junior Nogueira moved from 13th to 12th in team roping heeling.
• Rhen Richard moved from 14th to 13th in tie-down roping.
• Ty Breuer moved from 14th to 13th in bareback riding.
• Eli Vastbinder moved from 14th to 13th in bull riding.

Cowboys on the bubble for a spot in the Top 15 can find themselves a few dollars short of qualifying for the Wrangler NFR. The following cowboys climbed the standings to No. 16:

• Team roping header Riley Minor moved from 21st to 16th and is $987 away from breaking into the Top 15.

With the Old Fort Days Rodeo in Fort Smith, Ark., kicking off May 28 and ending June 2, the outcome of this rodeo and others are sure to impact the world standings.

Check back with next week to see who the new leaders are in the world standings.
