For the Record: Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo

Since 1955, ProRodeo cowboys have kicked off the new calendar year at the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas. Since, this Lone Star State rodeo has played host to some high-scoring rides and speedy times, but only the top scores and times make the arena record book.

All-around cowboy Rich Skelton earned the most money at Odessa in 2007 with $12,394.

That same year, two bareback riders set the Odessa arena record with 87-point rides – Bo Casper and Russ Hallaby. In 2009, their scores were matched by Ty Breuer, and a fourth cowboy, Austin Foss, made an 87-point ride at Odessa in 2017. Meanwhile, the two-head average record was set by Joe Gunderson in 2005 with 170 points.

Steer wrestler Ronnie Fields set the Odessa record in 2010 with his 3.2-second run. Two years later, Jake Shaw set the two-run average record in 7.5 seconds.

Team ropers Travis Tryan and Michael Jones set the Odessa record in 2010 with their 3.6-second run. Meanwhile, the two-run and three-run average records were both set in 2006. Tanner Green and Scotty Raines clocked in at 8.5 seconds on two runs, and Travis Tryan and Allen Bach made 16.2 seconds on three.

Saddle bronc rider Sam Spreadborough set the Odessa record in 2003 with his 87-point ride that was matched by Cody Wright in 2011. The two-head average record was set by Jeff Willert in 2007 with 169 points.

Tie-down roper Randall Carlisle set the arena record in 2010 with his 7.3-second run. Two cowboys share the two-run average record of 16.1 seconds. First came Clint Cooper in 2010 and then Blair Burk in 2013. Meanwhile, Trent Creager’s 27.6 seconds on three runs remains the arena record since 2007.

Barrel racer Layna Kight set the Odessa record in 2008 with her 13.79-second run. Kassie Mowry holds the two-run record with her 2010 total of 28.06 seconds. Sabrina Ketchum has the fastest three-run time with her 2006 total of 42.62 seconds.

Both of the steer roping records remain untouched since 2002 when Scott Snedecor made a catch in 9.0 seconds and Trevor Brazile set the four-run average record in 41.6 seconds.

The oldest arena record at Odessa is held by bull rider Brian Herman who made a 91-point ride in 1995 that remained unmatched until Colin McTaggart repeated the feat in 2010. The two-head average record is held by Jim Crosby who made 165 points.

Odessa’s biggest payout was in 2007 with $343,913.
