World champion team roper Sartain suffers injury

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nick Sartain, a team roping header world champion, suffered an injury to the thumb on his (right) roping hand Aug. 26 while competing at the Oregon Trail Rodeo in Hastings, Neb.

“I just hung my dally on the saddle horn and it jerked about half my thumb off,” Sartain said. “I trotted straight to the back end of the arena and my partner (Gage Williams) grabbed my finger and I knew exactly what had happened and I jumped in the ambulance. We went to the local care center there and they didn’t think they could reattach my (thumb), so they took me by ambulance to Omaha, two and half hours away.”

Once in Omaha, Sartain had surgery for an hour on his thumb.

“They trimmed the bone back and sewed the skin over the bone,” said Sartain, who lives in Dover, Okla. “Now, I have about half my thumb left.”

Sartain, who won the 2009 PRCA team roping world championship while roping with Kollin VonAhn, has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo six times (2006, 2009-10, 2013-15). He has never dealt with an injury like this.

“I’ve been fortunate, I have never bungled my hands up at all,” said Sartain, who joined the PRCA in 2000. “I’ve never been sidelined with burns or cuts on my hands. It was just bad luck, and this is the first real injury I’ve had. They didn’t talk about a prognosis for recovery. I’ve been around here (in Oklahoma) just circuit rodeoing (in the Prairie Circuit) getting some horses ready. I know this will be the end of the year for me, and I will have time to get healed up and see what we want to do for next year. We will just have to see how it heals up and if I feel like I can compete at a top level, I will be back after them.”
