For the Record: Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo

Although it’s only 16 years old, the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., attracts the biggest names in ProRodeo with one of the highest payouts of the season. In 2016, the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo set its record for total payout with $274,856.

As the end of the 2017 season approaches, cowboys are bringing their best to the arena for a chance to make the Top 15 and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER – and this often results in some high scores and fast times.

Every ride is a chance to set an arena record and this year the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo kicks off Aug. 26 and runs through Aug. 27. The following are the best rides and times the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo has seen since it started in 2001.

Trevor Brazile set the record for most money won in all-around in 2008 with $9,192.

Bareback rider Tom McFarland has held the arena record for a decade with his 89-point ride from 2007.

Steer wrestler Trevor Knowles set the arena record in 2014 with his 3.3-second time.

Team ropers Aaron Tsinigine and Cole Davison also set an arena record in 2014 with their 4.2-second run.

There’s a three-way tie for the saddle bronc riding arena record. Originally set by Chad Ferley in 2007, his 88-point ride was matched by Taos Muncy in 2010 and Cody Taton in 2012.

Tie-down roping also has a tie for the arena record as Jake Hannum clocked in at 7.4 seconds in 2009. Nate Baldwin matched him in 2010.

Bull rider Shane Proctor set the arena record in 2011 with his 93-point ride.
