For the Record: Horse Heaven Round-Up Rodeo

The Horse Heaven Round-Up Rodeo kicked off Aug. 22 and runs through Aug. 26. Since 1954, this iconic rodeo in Kennewick, Wash., has witnessed some rank rides and fast times so here’s a look at the arena records.

Bull rider Vince Stanton has the oldest arena record with his 92-point ride from 2002.

Trevor Brazile has held onto the all-around record for total earnings since 2003 when he earned $5,935.

Bareback rider James Sursa set the Kennewick record in 2007 with his 89-point ride.

Steer wrestler Clay Cowan clocked in at 3.1 seconds in 2008 to set the arena record. Meanwhile, the two-run average record was set by Bray Armes in 2015 when he came in at 7.1 seconds.

Kennewick’s team roping records are all tied up. Joel Bach and Allen Bach set the single-run record in 2009 with 3.8 seconds, which was matched by Erich Rogers and Cory Petska in 2015. There’s a three-way tie for the team roping two-run average record of 9.1 seconds that was originally set by Dustin Bird and Paul Eaves in 2014. The following year, Tyler Wade and Kinney Harrell, and Kolton Schmidt and Shay Carroll, all matched the 9.1-second record.

Saddle bronc rider Louie Brunson set the arena record in 2013 with his 90-point ride.

Tie-down roping was on fire in 2014 as two arena records were set. First, Randall Carlisle clocked in at 6.8 seconds, then Matt Shiozawa set the two-run average record in 14.4 seconds.

Barrel racer Terri Kaye Kirkland’s 2005 run of 16.43 seconds has yet to be topped.

Kennewick’s record payout was in 2013 with $164,899.
