For the Record: Yellowstone River Round-Up

Although the Yellowstone River Round-up at Billings, Mont., is an old rodeo with a lot of history, the rodeo didn’t go pro until 2010. Since becoming sanctioned with the PRCA, many ProRodeo cowboys have added this competition to their itinerary while racing toward the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER.

Almost all the arena records at the Yellowstone River Round-up are held by cowboys who have competed at the WNFR in recent years. As this year’s rodeo kicks off tonight (Aug. 17), each ride is an opportunity to make arena history.

The 2015 bull riding was top notch, as two cowboys set the arena record. Kody DeShon (pictured above and a left) and Wesley Silcox each nailed 88-point rides.

Just four months before winning the 2016 All-around World Champion title, Junior Nogueira set the Yellowstone River Round-up’s record for most money won in all-around with $4,949.

Bareback rider J.R. Vezain set the arena record in 2014 with his 86-point ride, which was matched by Clint Laye in 2015.

Shawn Downing’s 2013 time of 3.2 seconds in steer wrestling remains the fastest time at the Yellowstone River Round-up.

Team roper Kaleb Driggers and Nogueira set the arena record in 2016 with 4.4 seconds.
Three saddle bronc riders share the arena record. Originally set in 2012 by Cole Elshere with his 87-point ride, Chet Smith matched him in 2013, as did Rusty Wright in 2016.

Tie-down roper Marty Yates set the arena record with his 7.7-second run in 2013.

Barrel racer Callie duPerier’s 2015 time of 17.21 seconds remains the fastest run at the Yellowstone River Round-up.

Steer roper Rocky Patterson set the arena record in 2015 with his 8.8-second run. In 2016, Shay Good set the three-run average record with 33.9 seconds.

Yellowstone River Round-up’s record payout was last year with $138,912.
