Bullfighter Spencer injured in scary wreck

Scotty Spencer, who has been a PRCA bullfighter since 2005, knows all too well the dangers of the job.

While doing that job April 22, at the Longview (Texas) PRCA Rodeo, Spencer was severely injured by Andrews Rodeo Company’s Monkey Punch.

Moments after the first bull rider of the performance, Forrest Marshall, was bucked off, Spencer shot in to protect Marshall and the trouble began.

The bull was spinning to the left, and as Spencer ran in, the bull bumped into Spencer with his head and horns and pushed Spencer into the chute face first. From that point, things got much worse for Spencer.

“When I shot the gap, the bull hit me just enough to slow my momentum down that I didn’t get all the way through,” said Spencer. “I hit the bucking chute and bounced back out and the bull was still turning back and he came down on top of me with his back end and drove me into the ground.”

Spencer suffered a dislocated left hip and broke his left leg below the knee, in three spots.

“I also was knocked out during the accident,” said Spencer, 38. “I remember shooting through there the first time and him hitting me up against the bucking chute, but I don’t remember him coming around with his back end and hitting me until I saw it on the video.”

Spencer regained consciousness before he was transported out of the arena and taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. Spencer had surgery on his left leg April 23, which included a rod being put in his leg.

“This is the first surgery I’ve ever had,” Spencer said. “I’m not sure exactly how long I will be out. I’m planning on seeing Dr. Tandy Freeman this week in Dallas. I’m guessing I will be out around three or four months. I plan on coming back and being stronger than I was before I was injured.”

Prior to the Longview PRCA Rodeo, Spencer worked his first career RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, April 6-9, in Kissimmee, Fla.
