Standings shuffle: 18 cowboys move up

With nearly half a million dollars up for grabs between the eight PRCA rodeos in the last week, 18 cowboys moved up in the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings – largely thanks to the $250,000 at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up.

Although there were no changes, up or down, in the bareback riding, there were five steer ropers and four saddle bronc riders who moved up in the Top 15 since April 17.

Veteran and rookie cowboys alike know it’s easier to maintain a position at the top, when aiming for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER, than it is to play catch-up for a qualifying position in the world standings. It’s important to build a solid lead as the summer season approaches.

The following cowboys saw their position in the world standings improve between April 17 and April 24.

• Chance Howard moved from 22nd to 10th in steer wrestling
Trey Benton III moved from 21st to 15th in bull riding
Trevor Brazile moved from 18th to 11th in steer roping
John Bland moved from eighth to third in steer roping
Tim Bingham moved from 11th to sixth in bull riding
Westyn Hughes moved from 19th to 14th in tie-down roping
Billie Jack Saebens moved from sixth to second in team roping heeling
Tony Reina moved from sixth to fourth in steer roping
• John Stratton moved from 15th to 13th in saddle bronc riding
Hardy Braden moved from fifth to fourth in saddle bronc riding
Marcos Costa moved from fifth to fourth in tie-down roping
Vin Fisher Jr. moved from seventh to sixth in steer roping
Jesse Wright moved from seventh to sixth in saddle bronc riding
Buddy Hawkins II moved from 10th to ninth in team roping heeling
Sterling Crawley moved from 11th to 10th in saddle bronc riding
J. Tom Fisher moved from 13th to 12th in steer roping
Dakota Eldridge moved from 16th to 15th in steer wrestling
• Hayes Smith moved from 16th to 15th in team roping heading

Cowboys on the bubble for a spot in the Top 15 can find themselves just a few dollars short of making a Wrangler NFR qualification. The following cowboys climbed the standings to No. 16 this past week:

• Saddle bronc rider Cody Wright moved from 17th to 16th and is $1,768 away from breaking into the Top 15.
• Bull rider Guthrie Murray moved from 17th to 16th and is $969 away from breaking into the Top 15.

With the RAM National Circuit Finals Steer Roping and the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo starting this weekend, the outcomes of these rodeos and others are sure to impact the world standings in a big way, and possibly give a glimpse at who will compete in Las Vegas.

Check back with next week to see who the new leaders are in the world standings.
