Cave Creek offers intriguing roughstock matchups

PRCA rodeo action is returning this weekend at Cave Creek (Ariz.) Rodeo Days, May 22-24, and some of the roughstock draws wound up with stellar matchups.

Cave Creek will be the first PRCA rodeo to take place since rodeos were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March.

Cave Creek Rodeo Days will be broadcast live May 22-24 at 10:30 p.m. (ET) on The Cowboy Channel and the PRCA on The Cowboy Channel Plus App.

Bareback rider Caleb Bennett, who's qualified for the last eight Wrangler National Finals Rodeos, drew The Cervi Brothers Greeley Hat Works Little Bucker in the first performance May 22.

“I’ve been on him before a few years ago, and he’s kind of an older horse,” Bennett said. “That’s a pretty solid draw. I think for that rodeo he’s going to be one of the better ones to have. He’s better when he’s fresh, which he should be right now because there haven't been any rodeos. All in all, he’s dang sure a solid chance to win something over there. He’s going to have two or three big jumps in the beginning and he’s either going to stay hooked or circle around to the left. It should be nice.”

Bennett, who finished seventh in the PRCA | RAM World Standings last year, is ready to return to rodeoing.

“I’m definitely anxious,” he said. “For, me I went to The American (which concluded March 8 in Arlington, Texas), but that’s about all I have done all season because I had surgery on my right wrist, my riding hand, like a week after the NFR in December. It was a nagging injury for six or seven years. They scoped my TFCC and took out two big chunks of bone that weren’t supposed to be in there.

“They had to file back my ulna bone a little bit to take some of the pressure off the TFCC in there. The wrist feels better, and the bone is a little raw, which they claimed it would be for up to six months. That’s a little tender still, but it feels pretty good. I have been on a couple of practice horses, and it doesn’t feel near as bad as it did when I tried to ride at The American.”

The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a load-bearing structure between the lunate, triquetrum and ulnar head. The function of the TFCC is to act as a stabilizer for the ulnar aspect of the wrist.

Bull rider Boudreaux Campbell, who placed second in the 2019 world standings, will get on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Space Unicorn, and he’s thrilled with the draw. Campbell will compete May 23.

“I’m glad I got him because that’s a really good bull,” Campbell said. “I don’t ever remember getting on that bull, but a bunch of my friends have. Parker (McCown) got on him in San Antonio, and I watched that one. I think the bull went around there to the left, which should be into my hand and will be pretty good. I think I can win the rodeo on him. I won Cave Creek back in 2017, and that was the first ProRodeo buckle I ever won. I’m excited to go back because I haven’t been back since 2017.”

Campbell said after this break, he’s going to do his best to keep his emotions in check when he gets in the chute.

“You have to stay calmed down because you will get rolling too fast and try to do too much,” he said. “It’s still bull riding. I’m really, really excited to finally get to compete. I hope they start having more every weekend, so we can get back to rodeoing. It’s going to be a little different, but it will be nice to be able to get away from the house and go rodeoing.”

Another matchup to watch in the bull riding will be when Trey Kimzey, who made his NFR debut last year as a rookie, squares up against 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Ferdinand, May 24.

Campbell had an 89-point ride on Ferdinand in the final round of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Xtreme Bulls Division 1 event Feb. 22 to win the event.
