COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the last two seasons, steer wrestler Scott Guenthner has edged his way up in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

The Provost, Alberta, cowboy finished sixth in 2017 and fifth in 2018 in the final world standings. A year ago, Guenthner earned $94,000 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – fourth most among the 15 steer wrestlers competing.

Guenthner comes to the 2019 Wrangler NFR in third place with $102,750 and is aiming for that coveted gold buckle in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, Dec. 5-14. Guenthner trails season leader Ty Erickson by $43,331. A round winner in Las Vegas earns $26,231, while the average winner earns $67,269.

“I just need to be a little bit more consistent and start a little bit stronger,” said Guenthner, 28. “Last year, my horse (Tyson) was kind of off the first round, and we weren’t sure what happened. I’m riding him again this year, but he starts off better and I need to stay focused on each run as its own and go at it.”

Tyson is owned by fellow steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy, who will haze for Guenthner at the Wrangler NFR.

“Tyson scores really good and is honest and gives the same go every time, which is what you need,” Guenthner said.

Guenthner is competing at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, which began Oct. 29 and concludes Sunday, Nov. 3, in Red Deer, Alberta. Guenthner is the defending Canadian Professional Rodeo Association world champion. He’s riding Tyson at the CFR.

“This is a good way to get ready for the NFR,” Guethner said about competing in the CFR. “You have the crowd and everything. There are only six rounds at the CFR, not 10 like the NFR, so you have to be focused and it gets me going for the NFR.”

At the 2018 Wrangler NFR, Guenthner placed in six rounds, highlighted by winning Round 3 in 3.3 seconds. Guenthner has two career Wrangler NFR round wins, also capturing the Round 9 victory in 2017 in 3.3 seconds.
