COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Chase Dougherty, who made a memorable debut at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by winning the average and earning $232,750, will not be making a return trip to Las Vegas because of a right shoulder injury.

“My right shoulder, which is my free arm, has just been coming out of place all the time,” said Dougherty, 21. “The most recent time it came out was when I was riding in Walla Walla (Wash.), Sept. 1. I didn’t get hit or anything. I was just riding my bull and as soon as I made my move, it (the right shoulder) fell out. I got off the bull and ran to the chutes. It also popped out the week before in Miles City (Mont.).”

Dougherty has an MRI scheduled for next week, and after that will plan accordingly. He doesn’t plan to compete anymore this season.

“I don’t feel like putting the rest of my career in jeopardy just to try and make the Finals this year,” Dougherty said. “Even at that, it would been kind of a longshot to make the Finals. I’m not saying it would not have been doable, but it would have been tough.”

If Dougherty does have surgery, the earliest he plans to come back is February.

Dougherty was 20th in the Sept. 3 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $74,987. He was $19,367 behind 15th-place Daylon Swearingen.

Dougherty finished second in the world standings last year with $342,099 and won the Wrangler NFR average with 603.5 points while covering seven of 10 bulls.

Dougherty won more money in his event than any other competitor at the 2018 Wrangler NFR, resulting in him winning the RAM Top Gun Award.

“It’s obviously super disappointing that I will not go back to the NFR this year,” Dougherty said. “Now, I’m home (in Powell Butte, Ore.), and I want to regroup and come back stronger than ever.”
