Boudreaux Campbell grabs Kitsap Stampede victory

BREMERTON, Wash. – It was almost as if bull rider Boudreaux Campbell had a premonition that he would win the 2019 Kitsap County Fair and Stampede Rodeo in Bremerton, Wash.

He was on the back of the chutes during the Gooding (Idaho) Pro Rodeo when his buddy Braden Richardson attempted a ride aboard Korkow Rodeo’s Heathens.

“He was really good there,” said Campbell, noting he didn’t know much about the bull before that night. "I looked over at T.J. Korkow and said, ‘I think that’s the bull I’ve got in Bremerton.’ He said he was a good one.”

“So, I said, 'Maybe we’ll just go win Bremerton.'”

Riding in the final performance at the Kitsap County Fair just over a week later on Aug. 23, Campbell had an 87-point trip, bringing the premonition to fruition.

“He went out there and got right into my hand there to the left, jumping and spinning. He had quite a little action and I rode pretty good and they paid me. ... I like it when that happens,” he added with a laugh. “I was glad I rode one, the last couple of weeks have been kind of slow.”

He earned $3,920 toward the PRCA | RAM World Standings, where he was sitting eighth going into the weekend. He also picked up more valuable ProRodeo Tour points. Campbell was 13th in the Tour standings before the Bremerton win and is looking safe to qualify to both the Pro Rodeo Tour Finale, which has a week’s worth of rodeos left, and his third straight Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

The only part that didn’t go according to plan was the dismount, or lack thereof. Campbell hung up after the eight-second ride, getting stepped on multiple times as he tried to disengage from the bull.

“I’m good,” he said.

Campbell and hauling partners Steve Woolsey and Clayton Sellars were spending the night in Bremerton, scheduled to compete at the Kitsap Country Fair Xtreme Bulls event Aug. 24 before Campbell and Sellars hop a flight to San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

“We’ll see how I wake up in the morning,” Campbell said. “I might have to take a day off and let my body rest.”

The physical toll on bull riders this time of year can be high, but Campbell, who turned 21 a week ago, has no plans to slow down until Sept. 30, the end of the regular season.

“We’ll keep entering up here in the Northwest through Pendleton and then ease back to Texas and I’ll rodeo from the house,” the Crockett, Texas, resident said.

With big-money payoffs left in the coming weeks at the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 5-8, as well as the Division 1 Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale in Ellensburg, Wash., Aug. 31, there is no time to take a break.

“I’m glad to be going back there to Puyallup as well as the Xtreme Bulls finals,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll win a bunch more before the end of the year.”

Other winners at the $152,006 rodeo were bareback riders Kaycee Feild and Clint Laye (86 points each on Big Stone Rodeo Inc.’s Mr. Major and Korkow Rodeos’ Blue Room, respectively); steer wrestler Justin Shaffer (3.4 seconds); team ropers Kal Fuller/Kasper Roy (3.4 seconds); saddle bronc riders Wyatt Casper and Ross Griffin (85 points each on Big Stone Rodeo Inc.’s Bubbles and Big Stone Rodeo Inc.’s Batter Up, respectively); tie-down roper Adam Gray (6.9 seconds); and barrel racer Cheyenne Wimberley (17.04 seconds).
