PRCA For The Record: Ponoka

The Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede presents a golden opportunity for ProRodeo cowboys competing in the Great White North with total payouts of about $500,000.

Alberta cowboy Curtis Cassidy set the Ponoka Stampede’s steer wrestling record in 2001 with his 3.2-second run. Eighteen years later he’s still going strong in his 21st year of ProRodeo competition, having finished the 2018 season ranked fourth in the world standings.

Cassidy joined the PRCA in 1998 and has made six trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2002, 2008-10, 2014 and 2018). Although he didn’t win the average at Ponoka in 2001, he went on to win one of the biggest rodeos in his home province in 2006 and 2010.

Rodeo runs in the Cassidy family, as Curtis’ dad, Greg, is a former Canadian Professional Rodeo Association president. Greg Cassidy qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo 10 times in tie-down roping and 13 times in steer wrestling. He won six Canadian championships, claiming steer wrestling titles in 1985, 1987-88 and 2000, winning the Hi Point title in 1987 and 1988, and was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2015.

Curtis Cassidy won the Canadian Finals Rodeo steer wrestling title in 2006 and 2010, while his younger brother Cody Cassidy won the CFR steer wrestling championships in 2008-09 and 2011.

Now, Curtis is gunning for his seventh Wrangler NFR qualification while becoming one of a select few to surpass the $2 million milestone in ProRodeo career earnings. As of June 21, Curtis had earned $1,836,803. If he can win as much as he did in 2018 ($188,355), he could find himself in the $2 million club.

While Cassidy’s career earnings will take a considerable amount of time to top, if bulldoggers to want to beat Cassidy’s 18-year-old record, they’ll need to make a 3.1-second run in Ponoka, June 25 through July 1.
