PRCA For The Record: Santa Fe

Since 1953, Rodeo de Santa Fe (N.M.) has hosted some of the biggest names in ProRodeo, but only the best cowboys have left their mark by setting a rodeo record.

In Cash Myers’ case, one wasn’t enough when it comes to records or events. Although he was known for steer roping, tie-down roping and steer wrestling, the Kansas cowboy truly shined in the 2008 bulldogging when he tied the Santa Fe record of 3.5 seconds, helping him set the two-head average record of 7.3 seconds.

Myers shares the 3.5-second record with Randy Barnes and Todd Fox who set the record in 1991. In 2008, both Myers and Troy Orr matched the 1991 record time.

Myers lived up to his name by winning $1.66 million in steer wrestling, steer roping and tie-down roping. He kicked off his ProRodeo career as the all-around and steer wrestling rookie of the year in 1999.

His ProRodeo résumé came as no surprise, as success runs in the family. His father, Butch, was the 1980 Steer Wrestling World Champion and his brother, Rope, was the 2001 Steer Wrestling World Champion. Not too far down the family tree is Myers’ cousin, ProRodeo Hall of Famer and nine-time world champion Ty Murray (all-around 1989-04, 1998 and bull riding 1993, 1998).

Cash Myers created his own ProRodeo legacy with eight trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2000-03, 2005-08) and six to the National Finals Steer Roping (2002, 2005-09).

Although he hasn’t won any world titles, he’s come close in all three of his events, finishing as high as second in steer wresting (2002) and steer roping (2007), and 10th in tie-down roping (2001). He also ranked as high as third in the race for the all-around title in 2008.

Myers was featured in the 2004 Outdoor Life Network’s series “Samurai Sportsman,” where he taught a samurai how to steer wrestle.

The cowboy rodeoed hard for more than a decade before winding down in 2011.

Cowboys will have a shot at breaking Myers’ records at Santa Fe, June 19-22, so here’s a look at who’s at the top in Santa Fe.
