Tie-down roper Caddo Lewallen has big weekend

by Tracy Renck | Jun 18, 2019

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Tie-down roper Caddo Lewallen is in prime position to make his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo since joining the PRCA in 2004.

Lewallen rodeoed hard from 2004-07 and was sidelined with a knee injury in 2008. Then life got in the way.

Lewallen, who was the 2004 PRCA Tie-down Roping Rookie of the Year, and his wife, Christy, married in 2009 and had two daughters, Chanley, 8, and Callie, who turns 5 June 19.

Now, Lewallen is in a great place to rodeo, and it's showing. Over the weekend, Lewallen earned a combined $7,754 at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo ($3,685) in North Platte, Neb., Innisfail (Alberta) Pro Rodeo ($2,210) and Bonnyville (Alberta) Pro Rodeo ($1,859).

The big performance pushed Lewallen, of Morrison, Okla., to 28th in the June 17 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $24,051.

“I drew a lot of good calves, I roped good and my horse was good,” said Lewallen, 35. “It was really nice to start the summer off like this. I had won North Platte one time before, but I had never even been to Innisfail or Bonnyville. We decided to come to Canada, my wife and kids, so we could see a different part of the world and rodeo a little bit. It is a long way up here, but it has been good. The goal like everybody else right now is to try and make the National Finals Rodeo. It’s great to get to rodeo with my family, especially my daughters. Win or lose they are happy and proud of me.”

Lewallen is riding Chic, 10.

“I bought her as a 2-year-old, and I trained her,” Lewallen said. “I’ve been rodeoing on her the last four or five years, and this year she seems like she is coming into her own. She is getting better each time.”

Lewallen has a simple approach to try and nail down his inaugural Wrangler NFR qualification.

“You have to draw the good calves, and if you get a good one, you have to win,” Lewallen said. “Everybody out here can rope, so if you get an opportunity on a good calf you better use it because you don’t know when the next one is going to come about. If I can make it to the NFR, that would be a lifetime goal to get there finally. It would be an ultimate goal come true.”
