PRCA bull rider Trent Jacobson wins Las Vegas Days

LAS VEGAS – They say practice makes perfect, which would appear to be an accurate description of bull rider Trent Jacobson’s rodeo year to date.

“I’ve only gone to a couple of rodeos so far this year, but I’ve been getting on a lot of practice bulls,” the 27-year-old, Idaho cowboy said.

That time in the practice pen paid off on Saturday evening when Jacobson climbed into the chutes at the Las Vegas Days rodeo, held at the Plaza Hotel’s new downtown Core Arena. When his eight seconds were up, Jacobson had scored an 85-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Amigo, winning the rodeo and a check for $2,312.

Amigo was a stranger to Jacobson, but the cowboy talked to Dalan Duncan, who tied for third in Vegas and who had drawn the bull at a circuit finals. Duncan gave Jacobson an idea of what to expect.

“He kicked out and went to his left into my hand,” Jacobson said. “He had a good day, and so did I.”

There are more rodeos in the future for Jacobson, who plans to enter 50 to 60 more PRCA events this year, including many Wilderness Circuit rodeos to build up his ranking in both the PRCA | RAM World Standings and the circuit standings and to possibly qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

After winning a nice check, Jacobson immediately left the bright lights and glamour of Las Vegas and started the 10-hour drive back to his home in Idaho to fix fence. After spending some time living in Texas, he bought some cows and returned to Idaho.

On another note, the fans at the two-day rodeo at the Core Arena witnessed a Wright family performance in the saddle bronc riding, as 2017 Saddle Bronc Riding World Champion Ryder Wright won the event, while his dad, Cody, brothers Stetson and Rusty, and uncle Spencer all took home prize money, as well.

The Las Vegas Days Rodeo is the current version of the previous Helldorado Days Rodeo, which had been a landmark event in the city for 85 years.

Other winners at the $74,038 rodeo were all-around cowboys Clint Robinson and Rhen Richard ($1,914 in tie-down roping and team roping each); bareback rider Wyatt Denny (86 points on Bar T Rodeo’s Jitter Bug); steer wrestler Dakota Eldridge (4.1 seconds); team ropers Colton Campbell/Dalton Pearce (4.9 seconds); saddle bronc rider Ryder Wright (87 points on Bar T Rodeo’s Son of Sadie); tie-down roper Kalai Nobriga (9.9 seconds); and barrel racer Darby Fox (16.92 seconds).
