For the Record: San Antonio

by Matt Naber | Feb 07, 2019

Since 1950, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has hosted some of the biggest names in ProRodeo and witnessed some fast times and high scores, as cowboys competed for this iconic rodeo’s large payout.

Winning big at San Antonio can set the pace for the rest of the year, as this was the second highest-paying rodeo of 2018. The only rodeo that paid more was the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, making San Antonio the biggest rodeo of the regular season.

With such a large payout, it’s not uncommon for cowboys to leave San Antonio with more than $25,000. Last year, bull rider Garrett Tribble won $34,574, including ground money.

Winning San Antonio is a life-changing experience, but only the best leave their mark by setting an arena record.

Bull rider B.J. Schumacher (pictured above) nailed a 95-point ride on Diamond G Rodeo’s Mr. USA at San Antonio’s Xtreme Bulls event in 2004. Although this isn’t the highest-scored ride in PRCA history, it is up there, as the highest bull riding score for the 2018 season was 92 points, and only 29 qualified rides across all competitions scored 90 or higher.

Schumacher was an eight-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR (2002-09), having won the average in 2006. He also won the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2003. The Wisconsin-born cowboy amassed $1.2 million in prize money before retiring from bull riding about nine years ago.

As for San Antonio rodeo records, not counting the Xtreme Bulls, Ardie Maier holds the bull riding record with a 94-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Cyclone in 2010. The South Dakota cowboy has been active in the PRCA since 2003 and is still going strong, winning the Ashley (N.D.) Rodeo in 2018. Maier competed at the Wrangler NFR in 2010 and 2012 and has earned $638,582 in bull riding.

Cowboys have from Feb. 7-23 to top Schumacher’s and Maier’s scores, and the rest of San Antonio’s records, while earning their share of the prize money.
