News and Notes from the rodeo trail

Recently, the Ellensburg Rodeo revealed its official 2018 poster – a photograph honoring the legacy and contributions of the Yakama Nation over the rodeo’s nine-decade history. The photograph, which features Yakama Nation members Destiny Buck, Patricia Heemsah and Aeriel Speedis, was unveiled at the Washington State Horse Park Gala, Nov. 11. PRCA rodeo photographer and artist Molly Morrow donated a signed print, which was auctioned with a VIP rodeo ticket package, to benefit the horse park in Cle Elum, Wash. “We are honored to feature the Yakama Nation in the 2018 Ellensburg Rodeo poster,” said Ellensburg Rodeo President Jerry Jensen. “It is a great tradition to have members of the Yakama Nation part of the rodeo and opening ceremonies for the past 96 years. It is also very nice to have an accomplished local photographer’s work portraying the ride into the Kittitas Valley selected from numerous entries.” Dressed in full regalia, the Yakama Nation joined the Ellensburg Rodeo at the first event in 1923. Since the early days they have marked the official start of the rodeo by traveling down Craig’s Hill into the arena, symbolizing the way they came into the Kittitas Valley for years before settlers arrived. Families set up tepees at the edge of the rodeo grounds and members of the Yakama Nation participated in races on horseback. In the 1930s, there were as many as 600 tribal members participating in festivities. Yakama Nation members also open each rodeo performance with a traditional dance in the center of the arena ...             “You want to be a Top 5 guy throughout the year. I’m tired of going to the NFR at the bottom. That’s where the last two years have been. But I’ve done my job, and I’ve got the best heeler in the world.”

            – Team roping header Coleman Proctor sharing his thoughts about the upcoming WNFR. Proctor is fifth in the world standings and his partner, heeler Billie Jack Saebens, is fourth.
