For the Record: Redding Rodeo

Now entering its 69th year of rodeo action, Redding (Calif.) Rodeo’s arena record for saddle bronc riding was originally set before most of the cowboys seeking to break records at this year’s rodeo were even born. The rodeo kicks off today and runs through Friday evening.

In 1980, Mel Coleman set the Redding saddle bronc record with his 86-point ride that went unmatched until Cody DeMoss burst out of the chutes on Growney Brothers’ Painted Feathers in 2006. It wasn’t until 2012 that Jake Wright also nailed an 86-point ride on Growney Brothers’ Smooth Sailing, and finally Jacobs Crawley made it a four-way tie for the record when he rode Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Blazing Gun in 2015.

Redding Rodeo’s record for total payout was set in 2009 at $193,451. Four years later, in 2013, Shane Proctor set the arena record for most money won in the all-around at $5,881.

Bareback rider Cody Jessee set the arena record in 2000 with his 87-point ride on Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Earth Angel that went unmatched until Clint Cannon’s 2007 ride on Growney Brothers’ Raggedy Ann.

Trevor Knowles has the Redding steer wrestling records entirely pinned down as he set two arena records in 2013 with his 3.2-second run and his time of 7.4 on two head.

Team ropers Wade Wheatley and Kyle Lockett set the Redding record in 2006 with their 4.0-second time. The following year, Riley Minor and Brady Minor clocked in at 10.3 on two.

There’s a four-way tie for the tie-down roping arena record at 7.3 seconds that was made by Clif Cooper in 2009 and Shank Edwards, also in 2009. Then, Jack Vanderlans matched them in 2011 and so did E.J. Roberts in 2012. Also in 2012, Clif Cooper’s brother, Clint Cooper, set the two-head average record for tie-down roping at 15.4 seconds.

Barrel racer Trula Churchill set the Redding record in 2013 at 16.96 seconds – just one year after Christina Richman made the two-run average record with 34.50.

Bull rider Rocky McDonald’s record ride turns 18 years old this year. In 1999, McDonald went for a 93-point trip on Growney Brothers’ Copenhagen Cash that was unmatched until Shane Proctor nailed a 93-pointer on Growney Brothers’ Touch of Class in 2013.

Check back with prorodeo.com between May 17-19 for updates on results as they come in and for a word from one of Redding’s 2017 winners on Friday evening.
