Ryan Gray, Cowboy Blogger

Bareback rider Ryan Gray drew one of his favorite bucking horses at the 2009 Calgary Stampede. Here he is pictured riding Calgary Stampede’s Coconut Roll. Gray scored 87 points on the mare to finish second in the final-four round. Will Lowe ended up winning the title with an 87.5-ride on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Alley Trail.

Hello all! I can’t believe that it’s already August. It seemed like yesterday when it was the middle of June. Wow, it does go by fast, I suppose when you’re busy and you don’t have time to stop and think it will fly by. I haven’t even had time to come home the last two months. We have been so busy. We have been to a rodeo nearly every day since Reno. I have so much information to share with you I''m not sure where to start.

I’ll start with the most recent events, I guess. As you all may have read I was 94 in Eagle, Colo., It’s pretty neat to be a part of that record and I feel honored to share that title with Wes Stevenson and Will Lowe. It was an interesting performance. When they started the bareback riding it was sprinkling a little, a few drops here and there. Jason Havens, my traveling partner was the first guy out and he was 87 making a great ride. By the time they got to Brian Bain it was a down pour. I was looking down at him and he was on his horse with his hand in his riggin’ and the rain was pouring on him. They couldn’t get the previous horse that had bucked out of the arena and poor Brian sat on that horse with his hand in there for a good three or four minutes. He finally got out of there and made a great ride. When they got to me all I was thinking about was getting my hand in and keeping my equipment dry, which is somewhat important in our event because your glove and your riggin’ handle is a fairly precise fit, and as you know leather and water don’t mix well. I kept it dry enough and got out of there and to be honest with you the ride was all pretty fast. It felt good and I wasn’t sure how many I was going to be until they said it. All in all it was a pretty neat experience.

The rodeo season this summer has been pretty good the last two months. I had a great Cowboy Christmas, the best one I have ever had. Our whole group did awesome during the Fourth of July run. We went pretty hard and drew pretty good just about everywhere we went. After the Fourth, we went to one of my favorite rodeos, the Calgary Stampede. That is a neat rodeo! Every year we go up there it gets better and they find a way to surprise me. The rodeo itself was pretty good to me. I started off really slow the first four rounds. I was fortunate enough to draw well at the end of the week and make it to the finals and ended up drawing one of my favorite horses of all time in the final four 100K round, Coconut Roll. She was great as always and I ended up winning second on her. I was really happy and got out of there with a little bit of cash to boot!

The rest of July has been pretty good as well. I’ve been placing a little here and there, holding my own out here on the trail. It’s been good and I can’t complain at all. There is still a lot of rodeo left in August and September and I cant wait to finish it out strong.

I know a lot of you know and have kept up with Lacy’s father, Dale. He went to be with Jesus on June 25.  Our hearts are heavy and we miss him a lot but we know that he is in a place with no more pain and no more tears and we rejoice in that. If there was one thing that he would have wanted me to tell you about him it would have been that he found his strength and salvation in Jesus. He spent the last year and a half of his life spreading the good news to everyone who would listen knowing in his heart that it was far more important than the weather or the daily news. He is a great man and we will all see him soon one day.  We want to thank you for all of your support any prayers through this trying time.

Gray’s Bible verse for the August blog:
John 6:51 “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever.

Until next time, Ryan Gray
