Jason Havens, Cowboy Blogger 6/2/2009

Oregon bareback rider and fly fisherman Jason Havens is wasting no time involving his son, Finn, in his passion for the outdoors. Here father and son are checking out a creek.

Finn Havens, son of bareback rider Jason Havens, enjoyed his first horseback ride on Mother’s Day.

Greetings everyone, it seems like forever since I have had a blog up! I hope you all check out the new video blog on http://www.rodeoup.com/pride.html. The guys and I have been having a great time with it and there should be some really good episodes coming soon.

Since my last blog post, I have been elected to a new job as the bareback riding representative on the PRCA Contestant Executive Council. I was kind of excited and nervous at the same time to win the election. This has always seemed like an important job, but one that there will always be someone who isn''t happy with what you’re doing. So far, there haven''t been any major blow-ups. I have just been trying to stay on top of business and looking forward to trying to keep things running smoothly in our event. Hopefully, I’ll be able to help out our sport. I''m in the process of gathering all the bareback riders’ phone numbers and e-mail addresses. That''s not a small task and I still have a ways to go. I have been trying to send out group e-mails to all the guys. I’ve also appreciated getting e-mails from cowboys, so I can get as much input and ideas on the issues being discussed and any possible changes at the PRCA. This seems to be working. I''ve gotten a lot of good feedback so far and I think that it will only get better.

As far as spring rodeos are concerned, it hasn''t been too hectic which is nice. I''ve been riding well, but just placing, and that''s the biggest challenge. We just got back from Cloverdale, B.C., an invitational rodeo, and it was quite an event. The stock was great and the cowboys put on quite a show. We were all laughing about the fact that there were more 90-point rides in the bareback riding than the bull riding. There''s just something fun about being a part of a competition when guys are making great rides. It makes it easier to elevate your own game. The finals were really good watching. I felt like I made a good ride and was 86 points and didn''t even place! That''s a great finals.

My wife, Brook, and son, Finn, and I have had a nice spring. We''ve been going to Jordan Valley, Ore., to help our friends, the Skinners, brand and turn out cattle. Finn got to go on his first ride up in the mountains on Mother’s Day and we all had a great day. Finn is growing like a little weed and we''ve really been enjoying watching his personality develop. He changes a lot from week-to-week.

We do have a start on the garden for the summer and I hope we dodge the spring freeze. The fruit trees are blooming and there are a few seeds starting to poke up through the soil. All the other garden competitors better watch out!

(Note: Havens and his traveling partners Bobby Mote and Ryan Gray annually grow gardens with their families and e-mail in pictures to ProRodeo.com. Last year, Jason and Brook Havens received the most “best garden” votes from fans.)

From now through the summer I''m sure we''ll be pretty busy, but I''ll have some news up here from time to time, and you can see what we''re up to on the video blog. Let us know what you think of it and get ready for a great summer.

Until next time,
Jason
