Jason Havens/Cowboy Blogger
Hey everybody, it’s been a long time since I’ve written, but I'm glad to be back on the blog circuit. Since last fall we have been pretty busy with the new little man. He has been keeping us jumping but all in all he is a good baby, at least that's what everyone tells us, but he’s our first so we don't have anything to compare to.
We started the year by taking Finn on his first rodeo road trip for the Chase Hawks Invitational in Billings, Mont. It was a great rodeo even though it was minus 18 degrees outside. There was a good crowd and it was great to get on and see so many good horses. I think that I split fourth or fifth so that made the trip even better. We visited a lot of family along the way and introduced the baby to plenty of family that hadn't seen him before. Now they can all tell him that they remember when "he was only this big.”
We spent Christmas here in Oregon and (my wife’s) Brook's brothers all came for the holiday and we all got some skiing in. Brook, Finn, and I only went one day and we had a great time. The snow was good and there weren't too many people on the mountain so no waiting in lift lines! It was great to see all of Brook’s family. We are all spread out and busy so we don't get a chance to all get together very often.
The New Year’s fishing trip went all right. We didn't get skunked, but the conditions could have been better. Our friends, the Watsons, met us at my parent’s house in Clarkston, Wash., and we spent a couple days braving the cold weather to throw some flies. It had been very cold before Christmas and the river had frozen up, but the warm weather right after helped out our fishing cause. The ice on the bank of the river was two to three inches thick and went out into the river about 10 yards. It was kind of nice you could stand on the ice and fish without being up to your waist in the water and your feet freezing. We caught a couple of fish and had a great time visiting with our good friends.
I recently got the letter that I was nominated for the PRCA bareback riding event director position. If I'm elected, I would really look forward to serving and it would be pretty exciting, but also a lot of work. I had a lot of guys ask if I would run for the position and that meant a lot to me that the other cowboys feel confident in me to be their representative. If I do end up with the position I think that there are a few things that I could do that would help everyone out and keep them up to date on rodeo business.
Now it's time to get back on the road and hit some rodeos. I went to Denver but didn't do very well. I was at home awhile and then I was off to Jackson, Miss., Rapid City, S.D. and San Antonio. I'm going to try and come home as much as I can this winter and not spend too many long stretches away from the family. It's going to be hard to be gone but Brook is a great mom and she and Finn do fine, but you just miss so much if you stay away too long when kids are at this age. I always heard that and now I can testify that "they" were right kids are amazing and change on a daily basis.
I hope you all had a good holiday season and are looking forward to an exciting New Year. Enjoy each day as much as you can because it'll be over before we know it.
