Even though it’s the end of January already, I am still having a hard time writing 2009. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. My family and I enjoyed a little rest and relaxation just outside of Wickenburg, Ariz., where we are spending the winter months. Our good friend Buster Bain has a place down here and we really enjoy coming down here during the winter months. It also gives me a chance to compete at the hundreds of team roping events in this area. In addition, (my wife) Kate and (our daughter) Laura also participate in the numerous barrel races in the area.
Speaking of Laura, since after the Wrangler NFR she has competed at six barrel racings aboard her little pony and has collected six blue ribbons. In addition she has won a trophy that she says “is practically a foot tall.” Needless to say she is very proud of that and we are happy she is having such a good time.
The pony she is using was one that we bought for (our son) Charlie several years ago. Kate broke him and then since Charlie was still too little to ride, we let one of the other little kids in Oregon ride him and then we leased him out for a couple years to some kids that took him to the junior rodeos, where they won lots of awards. When we got him back we thought that Charlie would use him but Charlie didn’t really want to ride that much and he didn’t get along with the horse that well. So Laura tried him out and they are now unstoppable.
Last week, I went to four team ropings and although I didn’t have the best of luck, I am still having a good time. With as many roping events as they have down here you have to have lots of horses to keep you going. Prior to the Wrangler NFR, we brought our horses down and Tanner Bryson took care of them at the Bryson B Cross Ranch. Tanner has a horse swimming pool that is 120-feet long and he swam our horses while we were in Las Vegas, so they are now in great shape. They got up to five laps a day in the pool and it did them a lot of good.
Charlie has been riding his bike every day and enjoys playing with all the other kids in the area. We have a fun group that is in the area with several of our good friends from Oregon spending the winter down here as well.
It is nice to have some relaxation after the grueling 10-day Wrangler NFR in December. As most of you know, this year’s Finals didn’t quite end the way I had hoped it would have. Looking back had the eighth round turned out differently the ending would have been completely different. Despite that one round, the 2008 Wrangler NFR was one of my best, winning first in four out of the 10 rounds and tying the arena record twice first on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Big Tex and then on Big Bend Rodeo’s Spring Fling in the seventh round. I got on some great horses during the 10 days and I congratulate Justin McDaniel on winning his first world title. Now I am looking forward to the 2009 season.
I competed at the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa the first of the month but didn’t have much of a horse and ended up with a 79, which wasn’t high enough to get a check. Hopefully, I will have some better luck down the road. It is a little slower in the winter, so when you go you want to get on something that will give you a chance.
A final note before I sign off, I wanted to remind my fellow bareback riders to be sure and exercise your right to vote for your bareback riding representative. I am personally supporting my traveling partner Jason Havens as I believe he is the best guy for the job and will really represent all bareback riders. In addition, (1991 World Champion Bareback Rider) Clint Corey has decided to run for a position on the competition committee this coming year. Both Jason and Clint would be great assets for our sport and would help to move the sport forward.
