Guy Allen added gold buckle No. 18 to his collection with arguably his greatest National Finals Steer Roping performance ever.
The cowboy they call "The Legend" placed in six rounds en route to his fifth NFSR aggregate title. His 10-head time of 128.2 seconds proved to be a career-best. He also pocketed an event-best $26,581 and finished the season with $86,644.
"They all feel good," Allen, 46, said of his world championships. "To win the aggregate along with the world title is really special. I've had a great year and I had an awesome finals.
"I just wanted to come here and do the best I could. I practice that way. I missed one steer and it kind of got me down just a little bit, but I have some friends who picked me up and told me to keep going."
Allen's remarkable three days at the Amarillo National Center unfolded with timed-event superstar Trevor Brazile breathing down his neck. Brazile trailed Allen by about $2,800 before the 46th edition of the $125,000 NFSR got under way.
Brazile actually took the lead by winning two of the first three rounds and placing second in the other.
A couple of aggressive mistakes, however, in the seventh and eighth rounds knocked Brazile out of the aggregate race and world-title contention.
Allen, who owns a record 28 NFSR berths, sewed up the aggregate title in the 10th round after his good friend, Tee Woolman (Llano, Texas) struggled in stringing his steer.
"The Legend" responded aboard his four-time AQHA Steer Roping Horse of the Year, Jeremiah, with a run of 9.9 seconds to win the aggregate crown and capture his 13th world title in the last 14 years.
"He's unbelievable," said Woolman, who rode Allen's backup horse, Bailey, during the NFSR. "He's a machine. Any situation you put him in, he's been there before. To place second behind him is awesome because he's the greatest steer roper there will ever be."
