PRCA Committment
Animal welfare is a major and ongoing initiative of the PRCA. Not only does the association have rules to
ensure the proper care and treatment of rodeo livestock, but it also has both a Humane Advisory Committee
and a Veterinary Advisory Committee that periodically meet. The association also organizes educational
seminars for veterinarians and rodeo industry members. To coordinate its animal welfare efforts, the PRCA
employs a full-time animal welfare coordinator to oversee internal and public education programs.
The PRCA's Humane Advisory Committee meets twice each year to discuss any animal-welfare issues, to
review rules and to make recommendations regarding animal welfare to the PRCA's Board of Directors.
Veterinarians' opinions are a vital part of the PRCA's animal-welfare program, and the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association provide veterinary expertise to the PRCA. The PRCA's Veterinary Advisory Committee meets yearly to address veterinary issues related to rodeo and to create outreach programs for the veterinary community. Rules require that all PRCA-sanctioned events have on-site veterinarians,
which allows the PRCA to gather information on rodeo livestock and to conduct studies that continue to monitor the very low rate of injury to rodeo livestock at PRCA events.
