Brazile Adds Heartland ProRodeo Championship Buckle to Collection By Susan Kanode Tuesday, October 13, 2009
WACO, Texas -- If the action at the Heartland ProRodeo Steer roping Championships on Tuesday is any indication, the upcoming Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR) is going to be interesting.
While Trevor Brazile is not at the top of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings, he has absolutely been dominating the event lately and especially at the Heartland ProRodeo Championships held in conjunction with the Heart O'' Texas Fair and Rodeo. Brazile won the first three of four rounds and the over-all title to earn $7,733. That moved him from sixth to fifth place going into the NFSR, which has now been named after legendary announcer Clem McSpadden.
Brazile''s consistency here will serve him well as he attempts to rope and tie 10 steers at the Lazy E Arena Nov. 13 & 14. His preliminary earnings are just under $40,000 while Scott Snedecor from Uvalde, Texas, has nearly $65,000. Snedecor won the fourth round here and was second behind Brazile in the first round.
Noticeably absent from this year''s NFSR will be the "legend" Guy Allen. Allen has a record of 32 straight qualifications and was hoping to make it 33, but it all came down to the Heartland Championships. Allen was 18th in the standings before he roped here. He won $1,013 in the third round, but still fell $1,638 short of being in the top 15.
"I''ve watched Guy make some great runs this year," Brazile said. "It''s going to be different being at the finals without him. His record speaks for itself. I doubt anyone will ever accomplish what he has in the arena and he''s not done."
While things didn''t work out for Allen, the next generation of steer ropers found his groove at the Heart O'' Texas Fair and did not let the pressure get to him. Bryce Davis, the son of two-time champion roper Jim Davis entered in 16th place. He placed in the second and fourth rounds, finished second over-all behind Brazile and won $3,707. That was enough to move the Abilene, Texas, cowboy up to 10th in the world standings and qualify him for his first Clem McSpadden NFSR.
