   Pendleton winners pick up prizes
Kansas cowboy Jared Keylon won the bareback riding average at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, which concluded on Sept. 19. Keylon clinched the Pendleton title and won the final round by scoring 85 points on Korkow Rodeo’s Cherry Velvet, pictured here. He also placed second in the first round. All total Keylon finished with a score of 169 points on two head and pocketed $9,069.
Keylon’s upset win at Pendleton gives new life to Wrangler NFR dream

PENDLETON, Ore. – Jared Keylon did what he needed to do at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up to give himself a chance to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Now he’s got two long weeks of competition to see if can make his dream come true.

Keylon, 24, tied for second in the opening round of the bareback riding at Round-Up Arena and won the final round with an 85-point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s Cherry Velvet to win the average and earn checks for $9,069.

It brought his season total to $50,460, more than doubling his career-high of a year ago and good enough to move him past Tim Shirley into 16th place in the PRCA World Standings. Keylon trails Jason Havens for the final qualifying spot into the Wrangler NFR by slightly more than $1,000.

“I’m going home (Fort Scott, Kan.) to see my wife (Ashley) for a day and hit the road again,” Keylon said. “I’m going to Texarkana (Ark.) on Wednesday, Amarillo (Texas) on Thursday and then Albuquerque (N.M.) Friday and Saturday. After that, I’m I qualified into the Heartland ProRodeo Championships in Waco, Texas (Oct. 9-17), which is really important since I didn’t make it to Omaha (Neb.) this week for the Justin Boots Championships.

“I’ve still got a lot of good people behind me (in the standings), so I know I’m still going to have to fight it out until the end. But I’m having a great time doing this.”

Keylon and his wife bought some land 15 miles west of Fort Scott earlier this year and are planning to build a house there, so Keylon has had “a whole lot of extra motivation” for wanting to establish himself among the elite level of bareback riders.

He showed he belonged this weekend when he went head-to-head with standings leader Clint Cannon, two-time World Champion Bobby Mote, three-time World Champion Will Lowe and four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Ryan Gray to win the biggest title of his career.

“The first time I saw Cherry Velvet, my traveling partner, Matt Bright, rode him for 80 points in Salinas (Calif.),” Keylon said. “Then Brandon Martin had an 83 on the horse in the long go in Pendleton. It’s kind of a young horse, but it’s getting better all the time, and I thought it would be pretty neat to draw Cherry Velvet in the finals. I thought I could handle it. I was excited for the chance.”

Keylon was second-to-last in the riding order, so he knew very well where things stood when he climbed down in the chute.

“I was breathing kind of hard,” he said. “When you’re up against guys like Ryan Gray, Bobby Mote and Clint Cannon, you need to have your rodeo pants on or you’re not going to have a chance. I was eager to get out there and ride before I started to hyper-ventilate or have a heart attack. I’m just glad it all worked out.”

Timed-event cowboy Josh Peek also did his Wrangler NFR chances some good at Pendleton, earning enough in the steer wrestling and tie-down roping to claim his first Let ‘Er Buck Trophy as the rodeo’s top all-around hand.

Peek had total earnings of $6,053 to go with the trophy, a saddle, buckle and several items from Pendleton Woolen Mills.

The $4,233 he won in tie-down roping allowed him to gain a little breathing room in the Wrangler NFR chase; Peek had arrived at Pendleton in 15th place.

“It’s amazing,” Peek said. “It’s a cowboy’s rodeo. It’s a dream of mine. I’ve always wanted to win Pendleton.”

Other winners at Pendleton were steer wrestler Olin Hannum (16.7 seconds on three head), father-son team ropers Joel and Allen Bach (21.2 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell (174 points on two head), tie-down ropers Jerrad Hofstetter and Matt Shiozawa (33.7 seconds on three head), barrel racer Linzie Walker (56.54 seconds on two runs) and bull rider Colin McTaggart (175 points on two head).

It was Walker’s fourth consecutive victory at Pendleton.
