Bell not close to being rung out

At 57, steer wrestler Joe Bell Sr. was the oldest competitor at the $530,662 Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City and proof positive of the value of "try." Bell earned his sixth RNCFR appearance by winning the Ram First Frontier Circuit Finals Rodeo average title.

Big Lights brightens Thompson’s RNCFR title chance

Tyson Thompson had a very good Saturday afternoon. Not only did the Bradley, Calif., bareback rider win the third performance at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo with an 82-point ride on Carr Pro Rodeo’s Big Lights, but he has put himself in a great position to make Sunday’s eight-man semifinal round.

Cole Cooper can be excused if his emotions are just a little bit scattered. During practice on March 27, Cooper’s primary competition horse Rosemary, broke her leg and had to be euthanized. On March 30, Cooper and team roping partner Tyler Schnaufer were taking a victory lap at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo.

Champs rule opening night of RNCFR

The world champions proved their gold buckle talent on the opening night of the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. Of the seven events that are part of the competition, three were won by contestants who have won multiple titles in their respective disciplines – three-time steer wrestling world champion Luke Branquinho, three-time barrel racing world champion Sherry Cervi and two time saddle bronc riding world champion Cody Wright.

Monty Goodwin isn’t a native Oklahoman, but he loves the Sooner State just the same. Goodwin was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle community of Sunray, just a stone’s throw away from Oklahoma Panhandle. He moved to Weatherford, Okla., in 2006 to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University on a rodeo scholarship. He’s stayed here ever since.

Taos Muncy and Cody Taton are traveling partners, good friends and great all-around cowboys who have qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in saddle bronc riding. They’re brothers-in-law, too. Taton is married to the former Jordan Muncy, and all make their homes near Corona, N.M.

Sometimes the chase is more memorable than the catch. That’s the case with Luke Branquinho and the 2011 ProRodeo season, one in which the California cowboy clinched his third steer wrestling world championship in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Strong tie-down roping field set for RNCFR

Like every event, tie-down roping at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo will feature many of the greatest contestants in the discipline. From regular qualifiers like Bill Huber to world champions like Tuf Cooper, nine of the 24 cowboys have qualified to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Of those, three are from Oklahoma – Prairie Circuit winners Jerome Schneeberger and Hunter Herrin and Columbia River Circuit winner Blair Burk – and they’ll be competing in their home state from March 29-April 1 at Jim Norick Arena at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City.

It means a lot to plenty of others who make their livings on the rodeo trail. Take Troy Lerwill, one of the greatest entertainers in the sport who has been named Act of the Year in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association six times.

They have the Wright Stuff

For the bronc riding Wright brothers from Utah, there’s much more to family than the world of rodeo. That just happens to be the avenue by which they are best known. It’s also the arena by which they excel the most. Cody Wright is a two-time world champion (2008 and 2010) who won the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo average two Decembers ago. Jesse Wright is a two-time national finalist who shattered the saddle bronc riding average record this past December. They’re just two of the siblings who are part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
